HAPPY HOWL-O-WEEN!

Happy HOWL-o-ween peeps!  Hope everyone enjoys a safe and fun day of spooky fun tricks and many treats!On a mission for DOG

Don’t forget that we pups still don’t fully understand why you crazy humans dress up in scary costumes trying to frighten each other and then expect to receive candies and other yummy bad for you goodies.  Keep in mind especially tonight how we pups might be somewhat confused at all the happenings, the trick or treaters who may not resemble what we know as humans!

So, if we get a little spooked, possibly growl a little bit in fear of your crazy creepy costumes try to cut us a little slack and take a look at yourself in the mirror.  Also, don’t forget to keep us safe tonight, when you’re busy handing out candy and such…1392095_468812063238352_1166327602_n

Last night Mom made this cool Pumpkin Carob Cake for us to take to Day Care today…IMG_20131030_224838

While Mom was baking, Butthead, tried to play a trick on me and alerted me that there was something to bark about in the home office.  While I was busy investigating the supposed intruder, that little turd ran back into the kitchen to help Mom with the clean up…IMG_00000469

Hey!  It’s NOT cool to play tricks on the deaf dog…good thing I was wise to his wiley ways and of course Mom saved some for me too!IMG_00000478

PAWS FOR EPILEPSY

Hi there peeps!

Check out this article ( http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S3200703.shtml?cat=500#.UmrU-p3nbct ) on my bud Shadow who was adopted from the shelter and is now a trained service pup for his epileptic person Dezmond.  Thru their new group “Paws for Epilepsy” (https://www.facebook.com/pawsforepilepsytailsforacause?hc_location=stream) they are spreading the word that service animals don’t need to be pure bred pups, but that shelter or rescue pups like Shadow are also up for the challenge.  Check them out and give them a ‘Like’!

Also, check out these PAWsome  Pumpkin Cookies Mom made for me to take and share with my buddies at Day Care yesterday.  Hope your furkids enjoy them just as much as we did!  They’re perfect for a HOWL-O-WEEN party!IMG_20131024_072224

NIGHTMARES & CREEPY CRAWLIES!

Last night I dreamt I was lost and alone in the woods.  I heard strange eerie noises (yes, I know I’m deaf…it was a dream people, work with me here) all around me and they were getting louder and louder.  It sounded like a hundred quickly moving little legs were scrambling all around in the dark.  I couldn’t see them I could just hear them.  Getting closer, and closer, and closer!  Then I started to feel them, crawling all over me, starting at my feet and crawling up my legs, then they were on my back and up my neck!  The sound got louder and louder! Oh NO!  They were almost in my ears!  I panicked! I started jumping and running around in circles, shaking my head and ears vigorously, desperately trying to get those tiny little legs off of me!  I tried rubbing them off on the ground and with my paws but they were still there!  Then they struck…they bit me on my face!

I bolted straight up in my bed!  Looked around in the dark, spotted Mom still tucked in bed sleeping.  Whew, thankfully it was just a nightmare!

Relieved that it was just a nightmare, I started to get comfortable in my bed again.  But then I started to feel funny.  My face was itchy.  I scratched my head and face.  But the itchiness continued and was spreading!  I got up and rubbed my face in my favorite Flokati rug, but it didn’t help either.

I went to wake up Mom…“Mom, my face is itchy”…

She replied, “go back to bed Walter, we’ll get up in a minute”…

I nudged her some more; half asleep, she mumbled… “we’ll get up soon”… and rubbed my head and neck…it felt good, but I was still itchy…

“Mom, my face is itchy”…I nudged her again…

Dad got up and he had turned the bathroom light on but I could only see a sliver of light…I followed him.

Before turning to look at me, he said to me, “what’s the matter buddy?”

“Dad, my face is itchy…and I can’t see you”…

He looked at my face and yelled to Mom…”Walter’s eyes are all swollen shut!”IMG_00000361

Mom leapt out of bed and came running into the bathroom to see what Dad was talking about.  “Oh my God!  What happened to him?”…she said….“It looks like he got bit by something…but what?”

Dad said…”I don’t know, I don’t see any bite marks or anything.  I’ll check his bed to see if I can find anything.”

Dad said the only thing he could think of that we have around the house are centipedes and black widow spiders; but he’s never seen any black widows indoors so he guessed that it was most likely a centipede.  Kinda like this one we saw the other morning…IMG_00000273

Meanwhile, Mom was already getting dressed and telling Dad…”I’ll get him to the vet’s office and be there right as they open.”

Well, it was still about an hour before the vet’s office was going to open and Mom told Dad…”don’t feed Walter just in case it’s not a bug bite”…

WHAT!?!?  First my face itches, swells up so much I can’t see, and now you’re not gonna feed me either!?  What sort of HELL is this and what have you done with my real Mom!?

So hungry, itchy, a little scared, deaf and now blind; Mom takes me into the Vet’s office.  By now, the swelling had also encompassed the rest of my face, my cheeks, and my jowels.  I looked like a Shar Pei!IMG_00000368

 Since I already can’t hear and now I couldn’t see, I stuck very close to Mom, making sure that I could smell her and feel her next to me.  It was a new and scary feeling for me.  Then, the vet proceeded to take my temperature in the most undignified manner ever conceived…Rectally!  Ugh!  IMG_00000370

And after all the poking and prodding the Vet gave me a shot in the buttocks to help with the swelling and what appeared to be an allergic reaction to whatever it was that bit me.

After the Vet visit Mom FINALLY fed me my brekkie and then took me and Butthead to the office with her.  I spent the day at the office snoozing…IMG_00000390

And looking pathetic…IMG_00000384

Uncle Nick took pity on me and got me a Poochie Cone from Caliche’s Frozen Custard place!IMG_00000391

Mom gave me a second dose of Benadryl and by this evening my face was starting to look almost normal again…IMG_00000393

We’re not 100% certain what bit me in the face but I sure hope it doesn’t happen again!

PALEO PUPPY POWER SLIDERS

Mom’s getting ready for a local CrossFit competition this weekend.  That means cooking up and packing healthy snack food for her and her teammates.  Now if you know CrossFit you know that a large majority of CrossFitters  follow the Paleo diet (or lifestyle).  Here’s wikipedia’s definition of Paleolithic Diet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet

Well, if you’ve followed my blog about our dining out adventures you know that Mom strictly follows the PaleNO lifestyle.  Meaning she has an extreme weakness for breads, cheeses, and rice…everything NOT Paleo approved.  But she also LIVES to EAT and doesn’t just EAT to LIVE, and lucky for me enjoying and savoring good food one of her top priorities from the very moment she wakes up in the mornings.

However, since we discovered my sensitivity to wheat, she’s been cooking up treats and snax for me inspired by Paleo recipes she finds.  She discovered that the basic Paleo principles are very close to a dog’s healthy diet (with some exceptions).

I suppose you could say that eating Paleo is like eating Dog Food (back off Paleo Police, don’t get your Lululemon’s in a knot, it’s just a joke)…besides, when the Dog is a lucky one like Me…and the Cook is someone like my Mom…then it’s really not as bad as it sounds!

So, back to the snax.  So the other night when she was getting things ready for this competition she made up a batch of these Thai Style Paleo-ish Pork Sliders…IMG_20131016_225337

Thai Style Paleo-ish Sliders (Recipe for peeps, NOT for pups)

Ingredients:

1 lb ground chicken (can also use ground turkey, beef, or pork);

2 green onions, diced;

2-3 Thai Chile Peppers, chopped;

½ C cilantro, chopped;

1 egg;

Dash fish sauce, to taste (Red Boat brand is Paleo friendly, but just use what you can get at the local Asian market);

Dash coconut aminos, to taste (or relax and just use regular low sodium soy sauce if you do not have coconut aminos);

2 tbs Coconut Oil;

1 tbs Coconut Flour (optional for helping to get the mix to stick together);

How To:

Combine all ingredients except coconut oil, in a large mixing bowl.  Refrigerate for about 30 min to let flavors blend.  Heat oil in a frying pan and place meatball sized portions of the meat mixture in the oil, flatten to a small patty/slider/nugget size and cook over med heat until patty is halfway cooked.  Turn and continue cooking other side until done or to desired browning on both sides.  Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.  Serve with an Asian style paleo dipping sauce (or any other delicious egg roll or wonton dipping sauce you can find at the Asian market).  Store in air tight container in the refrigerator.

NOTE:  Above recipe is NOT for pups!

Since it was also time for her to make up some snax for me and she was already making a huge mess in the kitchen she made up these Paleo Puppy Power Sliders for me…hope your pup enjoys them as much as I do!IMG_20131016_231733

1 egg;

1 tbs Coconut Oil (optional, if using a good non-stick pan omit this);

How To:

“WE’RE ON A MISSION FROM GOD”

It’s Halloween season and that means costume contest time.  Last year, with all the hoopla of the new airport security scanners and such, Mom had the brilliant idea to dress me up as a TSA Scan Dog…everyone thought it was hilarious, but me…561900_357312071029690_1267310891_n

And although I did win 1st place in the Annual Yappy Hour contest…Butthead got to be a Fireman!557612_10151497836276040_1984243418_n

This year, I insisted on something a little more hip.  And what could be more cool and more hip than the classic Blues Brothers?BluesBrothersPoster1

But of course, since I am the tall slender good looking one, I am a natural to be ‘Elwood’…20131013_165024

And since Butthead is short (and round) he naturally must be ‘Joliet Jake’…20131013_164923

Check out these great Fedoras Mom found for us, pretty hip huh? Now, all we need is the Bluesmobile and we’re set…20131013_164947

Tonight was the last Yappy Hour for the year and there was, of course, a Costume Contest!  There was a bunch of good competition this year (especially Scuba Steve) but Butthead and I (using my suave hip ways, of course) managed to win the major award!  That makes me the repeat champ 2 years running!  I’m gonna have to up my game for next year if I’m gonna make it a Three-peat next year!

We also entered in the Better Life Pet Food Halloween Costume Contest.  The grand prize is a year’s worth of dog food which I’m gonna try to win to donate to the Great Dane Rescue of El Paso. Wish me (er, us) luck!

“YOU JUST CAN’T MAKE THIS (POOP) UP!”

Check out the great treats I got from Treat Me Right!  Not sure why one of the bags of yummies have Butthead’s name on them…must be a mistake, coz’ I’m certain Mom said she was ordering them for me.IMG_00000322

Anyway, I suppose I can share a few with him.IMG_00000325

Here’s a little story I want to share with you.  And now that we are working on helping out GDREP raise some money, now seems the best time to share this story with you so you understand why we feel the great peeps are GDREP are so special.

Early last year Mom had an experience that changed everything she thought she knew about shelters, humane societies, and rescue groups. You could say that she was naïve about how things worked or didn’t work, how underfunded or under staffed groups are, and especially about the politics involved. She learned a lot from the mistakes she made during this experience and most of all she learned that as well meaning all of these organizations are and the good that they do, there is still a lack of eager assistance to individuals (like her at the time) who are seeking guidance when found in a situation they have not experienced before.

She wrote this about her experience at the time that it happened (note – this is a true account of her experience written the days it occurred, I had to delete/edit some of her comments, as she can really have a potty mouth when she’s quite upset):

I am writing this account of recent events because I want to share with you my frustration and because the chain of events is so incredibly ridiculous and unfathomable that, as my husband put it “you just can’t make this (poop) up!” Please excuse the language I am about to use, although harsh it is an accurate reflection of my frustration and feelings during this event.

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012:  I was heading back from a business meeting at White Sands around 3 pm and as I was coming up over the San Augustine pass I saw this dog standing scared and confused in the middle of the two westbound lanes of HWY 70. I swerved to miss her and pulled over to the side of the road as soon as I safely could. I got out and started heading up the Hwy watching this poor dog run (with what was obviously a broken leg) over to the north side of the road to a ditch bank, by then another gentleman in a blue GMC pickup had pulled over and tried to catch her but she was too scared to trust anyone.

I caught up to him and asked if it was his dog and he said “No, I just didn’t want to see her get hit. It looks like maybe she already has been hit by a car once.”

He then decided the maybe he could block her from going up over the pass if he back up his truck and cut her off…so he proceeds to put his truck in reverse and back up ON THE HIGHWAY with on coming west bound traffic coming over the hill! I thought for certain he was going to get hit by a car or semitruck coming over the hill! Anyway, it did work and kept her from going further up the hill, but as we tried to approach her she ran back across two lanes of traffic to the center of the highway and ran down small shoulder of the road along the concrete jersey barriers.

The gentleman jumped back in his truck and moved over to the inside lane and slowly followed her with his hazard lights on while I jogged/ran in my business attire (NM ‘business’ attire typically consists of clean untattered jeans, a nice blouse and dress type shoes, so it’s not really quite as dramatic as it sounds) in the left west bound lane along side of her to keep her from darting back out into traffic.

I finally was able to get her to slow down and let me get close to pet her. She calmed down some and I picked her up and (dodging HWY traffic) carried her to my SUV while she proceeded to pee on me and express her anal glands simply out of fear. The poor creature was terrified.

I thanked the kind gentleman for his help and we discussed whether it was better to take her to the shelter or to the vet. Unfamiliar with the local shelter, I was not certain if the shelter had a vet and if they would actually do anything for her. So, covered in urine and anal gland secretions I headed to the first vet clinic I came across.

At the vet clinic they of course wouldn’t do anything unless I was going to take responsibility for the animal (except check for a microchip) so I agreed to an exam to assess the situation of this poor scared animal. She was not chipped. She seemed to be in relatively good condition with the exception of the broken leg. She was not in shock and the poking and prodding didn’t seem to indicate any additional broken bones or internal injuries but only x-rays would tell that for certain. She was also very FAT and her coat was clean and soft so it was obvious that she has a human out there.

After much debate of what to do I decided to go ahead with splinting the dog’s broken leg and pain meds. The vet clinic contacted the shelter to see if anyone had reported a missing dog with her description and I my husband also filed a ‘found dog’ report with the shelter and I email pictures of her to them. Since she was on morphine for the setting/splinting of the broken leg the vet clinic agreed to keep her there overnight without charge.IMG-20120214-00059Meanwhile, I had talked to the shelter and explained that I had already paid in full the immediate care of the dog’s leg but would need to take it somewhere soon for further treatment and that it is obviously someone’s pet someone more than likely is looking for it. Over the phone they told me that they would not care for the animal, I repeated that the splint and medications are already paid for…they referred me to the Humane Society. So, I called the Humane Society and the individual I spoke with told me to contact two other local groups instead. Call after call I was passed on from one recuse group to the next. I posted ‘FOUND DOG’ messages on just about every local FB page I could think of to get the word out there.
Wednesday, February 15, 2012:  The following day, I picked up the sweet dog from the vet clinic. She was in good spirits but a little timid. Not knowing what else to do and naïvely thinking that if someone is desperately looking for their dog they would go to the shelter first (I mean, I would, I would be there every single day, multiple times a day, shoving a picture of my dog in the face of every single person there, demanding to look in every kennel!  Heck they would probably have to call the police on me if I felt I wasn’t getting informed answers from them!).

Taking her to the shelter, she was scared, she tried to hide behind me and it simply broke my heart.  She had already come to understand that I wasn’t there to hurt her.  Leaving her there I had an incredibly sickening feeling in my stomach, I think mostly due to the seemingly sterile demeanor of the individuals that I had dealt with. I told them that if she is not claimed please call me and I will take her somewhere/someone/somehow and find her a home even if it ended up being my own home. I got the “well, it’s up to our board of directors if we euthanize after 72 hours or not; but we will not call you”. Well WTF!? I then asked if I could call daily to check, they said ‘No’…but I could come in. It left me with the impression that they’d rather euthanize the animal rather than pick up the phone and call someone who is saying ‘hey, here I am, I’ll take her and find her a home if her owner doesn’t show up within your prescribed timeframe’.

That night I left her at the shelter I had a tremendous amount of anxiety, a feeling that I had made a horrendous mistake. Realizing my mistake of leaving her at the shelter, I desperately contacted Great Dane Rescue of El Paso to see if they might possibly have some space to take her. They agreed with no hesitation that they would take her and made arrangements w/ the shelter for me to pick her up and deliver her to GDREP. GDREP took her immediately to their veterinarian for check up and x-rays. X-rays revealed that her broken leg was shattered so badly that it was going to need to be amputated. Again without hesitation of the expense or the fact that this creature was not a Great Dane or even a giant breed, GDREP went ahead and scheduled the operation for the following week.

The following day, the shelter contacted the GDREP saying that the owner had come to the shelter looking for the dog. The owner came to pick up their dog at GDREP where the owner informed GDREP that their vet was the same vet clinic that I first took her to and that they had been looking for their dog at the shelter for over a week and had submitted a lost dog report and description with the shelter!

“YOU JUST CAN’T MAKE THIS (POOP) UP!”…

The owner was grateful for all the efforts put forth for their pup and GDREP informed them of the condition and the scheduled appointment.

From there Mom does not know what ever happened to that little dog she had started to call ‘Cora’ (short for ‘Corazon’, meaning ‘heart’ since she was found on Valentine’s day). She hopes that she got the medical help and treatment that she needed, but we will never know. We will also never know the name of the gentleman who stopped to help her that day. IMG-20120214-00058

What she did learn was that while all these humane societies, rescue groups, and shelters have the best intentions and put forth great efforts to help the pups in their immediate care with the limited funds and manpower that they have; they are missing one critical element about educating and communicating with the ‘in the moment’ would be rescuers like my Mom.

Mom learned a lot that day. But she also learned that even though little ‘Cora’ wasn’t a Great Dane, when Mom needed help and contacted GDREP to say “Help! I don’t know what to do!” they responded without hesitation.  Not only did GDREP rescue me as a pup and little ‘Cora’, in a way they ‘Rescued’ Mom too!

GELATO! GELATO! GELATO!

Last Saturday Mom and Dad took us out again for lunch.  This time we checked out the Luna Rossa Winery & Pizzeria (http://www.lunarossawinery.com/) on Avenida de Mesilla.IMG_00000296

Although, it is starting to get cooler here in the LC, the fall days in the LC are still nice, sunny, and warm.  We sat out on their Dog Friendly brick patio and Mom and Dad ordered a bottle of their Pinot Grigio (one of Mom’s favs, next to the Nini)…IMG_00000277

Along with the Antipasto Misto, that included:  Sliced prosciutto crudo di San Daniele, carciofi (artichokes), grilled red bell peppers, and fresh mozzarella.…IMG_00000279

This place also had an Italian wood fired pizza oven and the parental units ordered the Pizza Luna Rossa that included:  Salumino picante, prosciutto cotto, funghi, red bell peppers, capers, carciofi, cipolla, and olive nere, mozzarella, and tomato…IMG_00000281

Of course Mom ordered a side order of chicken for us pups as well.  These peeps were super great and chopped and served our chicken in separate to go containers so I wouldn’t have to muscle Butthead out of my way…IMG_00000282

Luna Rossa is also the only place in town that I know of that serves homemade GELATO!IMG_00000286

For desert, Mom and Dad got a gigantic scoop of the Salted Caramel and the Chocolate Gelato (they were out of Dad’s fav, Pistachio)…IMG_00000289

Although, they were limited on any the doggy friendly flavor selections (ie. Sans chocolate, caramel, coffee, candies, nuts, etc) Mom got us pups a scoop of the Mango Peach Gelato to share…IMG_00000292

Luna Rossa gets a 4 PAW Walter PUPproval rating from me for doggy friendly dining establishment!  Mom and Dad give it a thumbs up for great food, service, and vino!

There’s only 5 days left to get these delicious treats from www.treatmeright.org and do some good for the rescue doggies too!  dappled apples 1

“FANCY DINNER”

So last Friday Dad made a Fancy Dinner for Mom, just because he’s pretty awesome like that sometimes.  Mom and Dad have for many years now made what they called ‘Fancy Dinner’.  It all started many years ago (a decade and a half, actually) when they were broke college students and didn’t have a whole lot of cash to spend on fancy meals or groceries.

The Original ‘Fancy Dinner’ consists of Pigs in a Blanket (a hot dog wrapped in a Pilsbury Crescent Roll) and Macaroni & Cheese (Kraft boxed mac & cheese w/ the powdered orange colored cheese) with a glass of Carlo Rossi Paisano vino (the kind that you can buy for $6 a gallon)… Las Cruces-20130405-00252

Although, they do still on occasion revert to their old college days and make the original version of ‘Fancy Dinner’; last week Dad decided he was going to make a different ‘Fancy Dinner’ for date night.  He found a great deal on some fresh veal at the local market and made Veal Scaloppini with lemon caper sauce and served it with a with herb and butter Tri-colored Potato Gnocchi and a spring mix salad… IMG_00000274

He did pretty good huh?  I coached him of course.

Although he doesn’t like to admit it, Dad spoils me too, he cooked up some veal for me too but without the flour coating of course!  (But, don’t tell him I told you guys!)… IMG_00000299

Oh yeah!  Don’t forget to get some of these delicious treats from Treat Me Right (www.treatmeright.org) before it’s too late!  Get some wholesome yummy treats for your pups and help out a great cause all at the same time! dappled apples 1

TREAT ME RIGHT

Hi there peeps!  I am in need of your assistance today.   As you all know, I am a rescue doggy.  I was rescued by the wonderful peeps at Great Dane Rescue of El Paso (http://www.gdrescueep.org/), where I lived with a fantastic Foster family who helped me meet my Furryever family who instantly fell in LOVE with me and adopted me.  I know, they are SO Lucky huh?

GDREP logo

Here is a picture of me the day my Furryever Mom brought me home, I was just a 4 month old baby…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My new big sissy PaiGow wasn’t too pleased that I was already hogging all her toys, but she quickly forgave me, afterall, not even she could resist my adorableness…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Really, I am one of the lucky ones and I do know how truly lucky I am.   I am spoiled with love, hugs, treats, toys, warm cozy bed, and the basics on a daily basis.  Sadly, there are many, many, many other pups out there that are not as fortunate and the peeps at GDREP work really hard to help every pup (regardless of breed) that comes their way…but they too need help to be able to continue their valiant efforts.

Here’s another baby picture of me with Mister Stegasaurous. Awww, wasn’t I a cutie?  Even at a young age I showed prowess as a promising hunter…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So, I am trying to help raise money and awareness to help the other rescue pups currently in Foster care with GDREP.  Some are victims of neglect or abandonment, while others have been victims of horrible abuse requiring extensive medical assistance.

For the next 10 days, we’ve been fortunate enough to team up with Treat Me Right who created these fabulous Fall themed ‘Dappled Apples’ Wheat & Sugar Free doggy treats just for our cause…dappled apples 1

Between midnight October 4th thru 14th purchases of the ‘Dappled Apples’ cookies from Treat Me Right (www.treatmeright.org) will go to help support the Great Dane Rescue of El Paso.  $3 from each bag of cookies ordered will go to help rescue doggies like me!  How cool is that?  If you could, share this post with your doggy loving friends and family and help me get the word out!

treatmeright

Afterall…what pup doesn’t love fabulous healthy puppy treats and helping out fellow less fortunate pups in the process?! Thanx again for all your help folks.

HELLO AUTUMN, GOOD-BYE DOVE HUNTING

Sadly, Summer days are over and Fall has arrived.  This time of year here in the LC is bitter-sweet.  The horrendously hot summer days are over and day time temperatures are typically in the low 80’s.  But at night the temperatures start to drop by nearly 40 degrees!  Which means old man Winter is right around the corner…and I DO NOT like the cold!

So around this season is when I start insisting that Mom bundles me up at night…Las Cruces-20130103-00195

It also means, sadly, dove season is over and I don’t get to enjoy any of these field fresh dove hearts until next season…IMG_00000170

In our neck of the desert, there are three types of dove to hunt, all of which are quite tasty.  There are Mourning Dove…

And Eurasian Collared Dove…

We have been enjoying these field to plate dove poppers several evenings this past month…IMG_00000197

Made by pairing each little dove breast half with a sliver of jalapeno or fresh roasted green chile, wrapping them with a half a slice of bacon and throwing them on the grill.  Served up with some Ranch dip, they make great appetizers at Happy Hour.

For a Dove PUPper version for me and Butthead, Mom simply eliminates the chile or jalapeno and serves them with a plain yogurt dip!  They are delish! (toothpicks are removed before serving, of course)IMG_00000173

For the dove breasts that don’t get turned into poppers Mom minces them in the food processor to use in dishes like tacos or enchiladas, or delicious sliders for me!   They may be the rats of the skies but these critters are super tasty and versatile substitute for ground beef in many dishes.

Until next season, lovely, tasty, little dove…
