This past weekend was a fantastic one. On Saturday morning Mom and I (and Butthead too) went for a short 2 mile morning run down to Old Mesilla and stopped at The Bean ( for a cup of Joe and some brekkie. The Bean is a neat little doggy friendly coffee spot in Old Mesilla with good coffee and delicious sandwiches and pastries. Mom and I will post a separate review of The Bean at a later time.

After breakfast, we wandered over to the Plaza ( to check out the scene and I was delighted (Mom and Butthead were not as equally enthusiastic) to find that they were about to start the Cupid’s Chase 5K race! I rushed Mom over to the registration desk so we could register and after the lady working the registration desk ignored us for about 5 minutes she finally asked if she could help us. Mom told her that we wanted to register for the race. The lady looked down at her registration documents packed them up in a box and then told Mom “Sorry, registration is now closed.”

Although Butthead was thoroughly relieved to hear this, I was completely devastated! I looked up at Mom with the saddest face I could muster…she saw the disappointment in my eyes and told me…”It’s OK Walter, they cannot stop us from running in the Public-Right-of-Way if that’s what we want to do! Follow me boys!”

We then proceeded to merge into the crowd waiting at the starting line…IMG_00000623

We stood among people of all ages, some had crazy costumes with Valentine themes, others were wearing red and pink, some were pushing kids in all terrain baby joggers, while there were also a few other pups with their peeps. Butthead and I fit right in with our Valentine bandanas as we became one of the crowd hoping to not get noticed by the race police.

Once the starting horn blew, the crowd started to move, and we were off! Yay! We were running! Keeping with the flow of traffic weaved between the other runners as quickly as I could while dragging Mom and Butthead behind me. I kept a pretty good pace despite the two slow pokes running with me, running through the old town, around the pecan orchards, past the historic buildings, and back to the plaza. We crossed the finish line and that’s when the race official asked Mom…”Where is your race number?”…Mom replied…”um, they didn’t give me one”…and we proceeded to scurry off to find some water.  It seems that my rebellious nature is starting to rub off on Mom!

And here’s a great treat to make for your sweetheart this Valentine’s, hope you enjoy!

2 C Brown Rice Flour;
1/2 C Flaxseed Meal;
1/2 C Rolled Oats;
1 C mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, blackberries);
1 very ripe banana;
1 Egg;
1/4 C dry milk powder;
1/2 tsp. vanilla;

How to:
Preheat oven to 325oF. Combine dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. In separate bowl, mix together berries, banana, egg, and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until forming a stiff dough. Allow dough to rest for about 30 minutes for the oatmeal to absorb excess moisture. Knead dough until all ingredients are thoroughly distributed. Divide dough and roll out sections to a 1/4″ thickness, between pieces or parchment paper or on a floured surface. Using cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place onto parchment lined cookie sheets. IMG_20131124_161751

Bake for 30-45 minutes or until center of cookie is firm. Leaving cookies in the oven, turn off oven and allow cookies to completely cool.

NOTE: ALWAYS consult with your pet’s veterinarian regarding ingredients, serving sizes, & special dietary requirements prior to changing your pet’s diet.
